Budget supports Toowoomba Hospital’s excellent performance record
Trevor Watts MP, Member for Toowoomba North today announced that the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service has received a 5.1% increase in funding for its 2013-2014 budget.
One of the budget highlights includes the allocation of $9.8m in 2013-14 to upgrade the kitchen at Toowoomba Hospital, forecast for completion in 2014.
Another Budget commitment is the commencement of the construction of a Mental Health Community Care Unit at Toowoomba Hospital.
Mr Watts stated that the Newman Government has brought about many positive changes for the Toowoomba Hospital in their first budget term.
On 1st July 2012 a new era of healthcare was announced by the Newman Government following the appointment of the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service Board (DDHHS). The new board system was developed to give Queensland health services localised management and expertise.
In May 2013 the Board announced an allocation of an extra $3 million for elective surgery at Toowoomba Hospital.
“The dividends of this funding boost are now resulting in more elective surgery at Toowoomba Hospital.”
Recently released performance data shows that the percentage of emergency patients who waited less than four hours was 64 per cent in September 2012 quarter and in the March 2013 quarter that percentage is now 77 per cent,” Mr Watts said
“These substantial improvements are a result of the local board’s diligent efforts to manage our health services on a sensible and sustainable basis.” he said.
Mr Watts went on to say that “it’s good to see the decisive action of the Board, finding efficiencies and then allocating funds to do extra category 2 and 3 patients. The DDHHS is making a real difference in the lives of people in their communities.”
The Toowoomba Hospital has benefited greatly as a result of the Newman Government initiative in appointing the DDHHS and this facility has continued to flourish under the Newman Government’s support and focus on economic growth, rebuilding Queensland and making our communities more resilient, by working together we are ensuring Queensland remains a Great State with Great Opportunity.
